SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Five “terrorists” were detained in coordination with the security forces in Sulaimani province, said the ministry of defense on Wednesday.

The Iraqi defense ministry said units from the intelligence agency in Sulaimani in coordination with the directorate of Asayish arrested five “terrorists” in the province in accordance with article 4 of counter-terrorism law.

They were wanted by the investigative court in Karbala, the ministry said in a statement.

The Iraqi security forces have detained dozens of Islamic State (ISIS) suspects in coordination with the Kurdish forces in the past months.

In 2017 Baghdad announced victory over the militant group, and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.

The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
