KRG PM, U.N. special adviser discuss prosecution of ISIS militants

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani discussed with a U.N. special adviser the prosecution of Islamic State (ISIS) militants for their crimes against humanity.

Barzani met with special adviser to head the U.N. Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by ISIS Karim Asad Ahmed Khan in Erbil on Sunday.

Both sides discussed the process of prosecuting ISIS militants and enhancing means of cooperation between judicial authorities in the Region’s government and the federal government, the KRG said in a statement.

The U.N. special adviser shed light on the latest legal and technical procedures related to the prosecution of ISIS militants for their crimes against humanity, the KRG statement read.

Barzani said the international community should coordinate and cooperate to find “an appropriate mechanism” to compensate the victims of ISIS attacks and to rebuild areas destroyed by ISIS militants.
