SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani said on Wednesday those who had used the party for personal interests would not be “pardoned”.
Talabani held a meeting with members of the PUK leadership in Erbil on Wednesday, his office said in a statement. Qubad Talabani, deputy prime minister, and Rewaz Fayaq, parliament speaker, also attended the meeting.
The PUK co-leader discussed during the meeting the internal situation of the party and changes as well as PUK’s preparations for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary election, according to the statement.
Talabani said the PUK had made several steps and that changes within the party was to protect the party’s “prestige” and the national and patriotic values that the PUK believe, the statement said.
“The PUK is not the property of any group or any self-interested person, and we will not allow the history of this party to be blemished,” Talabani added.
“All we have done was to protect the party of the martyrs from deviation and misleading. The PUK was established within the people and all its efforts must be for sake of people not for a group of people who used the PUK for their special interests and purposes,” he noted.
Talabani assured the PUK’s followers that the party would not become the “victim of special purpose and personal interests,” the statement read.
“Those who have done these acts will not be pardoned and will be brought to justice,” he said.
