SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A Peshmerga was wounded in a mine attack in the Kurdistan Region’s district of Amedi on Wednesday, a senior official said, accusing the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of plating it.
Deputy minister of Peshmerga forces Sarbast Lazgin said a mine which he said planted by the PKK hit a vehicle of the Peshmerga forces in Amedi, injuring a Peshmerga slightly.
“The PKK has planted a mine on a road used by the Peshmerga and civilians in the area,” Lazgin stated.
“We want to inform the public and Kurdistan’s people that the PKK has repeated this act several times in the area where the Peshmerga are on duty, and it carries out destructive acts,” he added.
“By these acts, it creates danger on the borders and civilians.”
The PKK which has bases in the Kurdistan Region’s mountains is an armed group fighting for rights of Kurds in Turkey. It has been fighting the Turkish military in southeast of Turkey and the Kurdistan Region’s border areas.
In June, five members of the Peshmerga forces were killed and seven others were injured after their convoy was attacked on Mount Matin.
The convoy was hit either by a rocket or an improvised explosive device (IED) as it was heading toward a point on the mountain.
The ministry of Peshmerga said the PKK fighters “ambushed” a unit of the Peshmerga forces on Mount Matin in Amedi district, northeast of Duhok.
The PKK denied the accusations and called for investigations into the attack.
