Security forces detain 11 over attacking group of tourists in Erbil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Security forces in Erbil arrested 11 people over attacking a group of tourists who visited the Kurdistan Region for the New Year holiday, the governorate said on Friday.

Erbil Governorate said a group of people attacked several vehicles carrying tourists from Baghdad and other Iraqi cities in the Region’s capital on Thursday night.

The tourists visited Erbil to spend the New Year holidays, the governorate added.

“Police and security forces immediately took necessary measures and detained 11 people from the attackers who will be brought to justice,” Erbil governorate said in a statement.

“We reaffirm that we will not allow anybody or any sides to destabilize the security and tranquility of the Kurdistan Region, and to distort the reputation of the Region known for its hospitality,” it stated.

“Anyone who commits such violations will be held accountable.”

Tourists from central and southern Iraqi cities visit the Kurdistan Region during New Year and other holidays.
