SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Germany will build a 100-bed hospital for COVID-19 patients in Sulaimani, the country’s consulate said on Monday.

“We are in a very critical phase of the pandemic – prevention and adequate medical care are of the essence,” German Consulate General in Erbil said.

It added that Germany “is proud to support” the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and authorities in Sulaimani, noting that it would build “a brand new, mobile clinic: 100 beds and 38 ICUs to be operational in the near future.”

The Germany’s support for the Region comes as the Kurdistan Region is facing a surge in coronavirus cases.

On Monday, the Region’s health ministry recorded 2,543 new cases and 19 deaths from the virus, bringing the infection tallies to more than 256,000 and 4,951 fatalities.
