Authorities say 54 corruption cases sent to Kurdistan courts in 2021

Head of Kurdistan Region’s Commission of Integrity Ahmed Anwar speaks in a press conference in Erbil, August 9, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s integrity commission said on Monday it had sent 54 cases of corruption to courts in the first half of this year.

Head of the Commission of Integrity Ahmed Anwar said the cases were sent to courts for investigation between January 1 and June 30.

“Only five cases have been settled so far,” Anwar said in a press conference.

“Investigations have been completed in the other cases and we are waiting on the courts to make a decision about them,” he noted.

As many as 158 lawsuits were filed at courts in the Kurdistan Region in the first half of 2021, bringing the total to 445 suits, he added.

“The total number of corruption cases that the commission of integrity is investigating is 722 cases, including 277 informant requests and 455 lawsuits,” he said.

Anwar also called for the establishment of a special court to investigate corruptions in the Kurdistan Region.

“One of the main issues we have and we have talked about is the lack of a court specified to the cases of corruption,” he said.

The Kurdistan Region’s commission of integrity follows up corruption cases and takes lawsuits to courts for investigations and judgement.

“The process to settle the cases is slow now, and there are still 128 cases in the courts which haven’t been settled yet,” he noted.
