Court calls on Kurdistan parliament to strip lawmaker of immunity

File – Member of Kurdistan Parliament Ali Hama Salih

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A court in Sulaimani province has called on the Kurdistan parliament to strip lawmaker Ali Hama Salih of immunity from prosecution.

Penjwen investigative court said in a communique it sent to the parliament on December 14 that the directorate of Bashmakh border crossing community had filed a lawsuit against the lawmaker for accusations he had made against the directorate.

“Lawmaker Ali Hama Salih has alleged on social media that several illegal trucks were smuggled in without undergoing customs,” the communique cited Penjwen court as saying.

“We are calling on you [parliament] to inform us about approval for lifting the immunity of the lawmaker and taking legal measures in accordance with Article 433 of the [Iraqi Penal Code],” it said.

The lawmaker has been accusing officials and political leaders of involvement in smuggling through the border crossings.
