SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A group of Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked a village in Makhmour district, southwest of Erbil, late on Wednesday, according to Esta’s reporter.

Esta Media Network reporter in the area said the militants fired mortar shells at the village of Adla on Wednesday night, and that casualties remained unclear.

“ISIS movements have increased in the area recently. Sound of gunshots were heard in several villages last night,” the reporter added.

He cited a security source as saying that ISIS militants had also blown up a transmission power tower in the center of the district at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Despite measures to prevent ISIS attacks on the towers, the militant group continues to target and detonate the transmission towers and lines in the country.

On Sunday, the security forces thwarted an attempted attack on two other power towers in Hit district in Anbar province, the Iraqi military said.

No groups have claimed responsibility for attacks on the power towers.

But Iraqi authorities accuse Islamic State (ISIS) militants of targeting the country’s power towers in several provinces.

The explosion of towers comes as Iraq is struggling with electricity outage in several provinces in central and south of the country.

Power from Iraq’s main grid suffers year-round from hours-long cuts each day, but the shortages worsen during the hot summer months when temperatures regularly reach 50 degrees and households rely on air conditioning.
