SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Sulaimani will launch a campaign to seize unlicensed weapons and vehicles with tinted windows, police said on Sunday.

Officials at the directorate of police and the directorate of traffic police in Sulaimani held a meeting on Sunday to discuss ways to deal with vehicles with fake plates and tinted windows and unlicensed firearms.

Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani requested the two related institutions to hold the meeting, Esta Media Network reporter in Sulaimani said.

The two directorates have given one-week deadline to people with unlicensed firearms and drivers having vehicles with fake plates and tinted windows as well as motorcycle riders below 18 and people who received permit from individuals to hold firearms.

“One week has been given to people to know that those were a violation before. No one’s permit is accepted for firearms, tinted vehicles, and others that violate law,” spokesman of police Sarkawt Ahmed told Esta Media Network.

“The campaigns will continue until this phenomenon is ended,” he said.

Ahmed further said the police’s step would reduce crimes, gunfire and car accidents, which are on a rise in the Kurdistan Region.

Despite decisions to prosecute people with unregistered weapons, the use of firearms have increased in the Kurdistan Region. Weapons are often used to settle personal or tribal disputes.
