Kurdistan Region president speaks by phone with Iran’s Raisi

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday spoke by phone with Iran’s President-elect Ebrahim Raisi and congratulated him on his victory in the Iranian presidential elections.

With all 28.9 million ballots counted, Raisi was elected with a tally of 17.9 million, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on state TV on Saturday.

The Region’s president expressed appreciation for Iran’s support to the Kurdistan Region during difficult times, his office said in a statement.

He hoped that “Kurdistan Region’s historic relations with Iran develop further, based on mutual interests and neighborly bonds,” the statement read.

“The President expressed hope that the mutual relations will lead to strengthened cooperation and partnership,” his office cited him as saying.

Iran’s Raisi, for his part, expressed delight with the phone call, hoping that relations and partnership of the Islamic Republic of Iran with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region expands further, according to the statement.
