SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Three people have been killed and six others injured in Erbil province in the past two days, according to police.
Two men were shot dead and a woman was wounded by two other men who police said were brothers of the woman in Erbil city on Sunday night.
“The incident happened due to an old social and family problem,” Hogr Aziz, spokesman of the police directorate in Erbil, told Esta Media Network.
Aziz added that police officers had launched investigations into the incident and into arresting the two men who are still at large.
On Saturday night, another man was killed and five others were wounded after two neighbors exchanged gunfire in Qushtapa town, south of Erbil.
Police detained six perpetrators over the shooting, Aziz said.
“One of the perpetrators is the main doer of the crime,” he added, noting that a case on the incident has been opened.
“Most of the issues are either social or family problems,” Aziz said, calling on people to go to courts to find solutions to their issues.
Cases of murder are on the rise in the Kurdistan Region. Authorities say most of the cases are due to social problems.
In April, at least four people including a woman were killed in the Kurdistan Region in just three days.
The general directorate of police said in December that it had recorded 180 cases of murder in the Kurdistan Region in 2020.
Sixty-five cases were in Erbil, 50 were in Sulaimani, 61 others were in Duhok and four cases were in Halabja, according to the directorate’s statistics.
