Sulaimani police begin campaign to seize unlicensed firearms, tinted vehicles

Units of police and traffic police launch a campaign to seize vehicles with fake plates and tinted windows as well as unlicensed firearms in Sulaimani, July 25, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Police in Sulaimani have launched a campaign to seize unlicensed firearms and vehicles with tinted windows and fake plates.

Officials at the directorate of police and the directorate of traffic police in Sulaimani held a meeting last week to discuss ways to deal with vehicles with fake plates and tinted windows and unlicensed firearms.

Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani ordered the two institutions to hold a meeting to find ways to put an end to the issue.

Both directorates gave one-week deadline to people with unlicensed firearms and drivers having vehicles with fake plates and tinted windows as well as motorcycle riders below 18 years old and people who received permit from individuals to hold firearms.

The directorates of police and traffic police deployed several units to streets in Sulaimani city on Sunday as part of the campaign.

Sulaimani police chief Aso Sheikh Taha told reporters that the campaign would continue to seize unregistered vehicles and vehicles with tinted windows, as well as unlicensed firearms.

“We will take all kinds of measures against those who violate law,” he said.

“The unlicensed firearms will be seized and the person will be brought to justice,” he added.

Despite decisions to prosecute people with unregistered weapons, the use of firearms have increased in the Kurdistan Region. Weapons are often used to settle personal or tribal disputes.
