SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil on Monday.
Halbousi arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Monday morning to discuss early parliamentary elections in Iraq, scheduled for October 10.
Halbousi and Barzani discussed the latest developments in Iraq, the upcoming elections, expectations for the country’s political map in the future, relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and the threat posed by Islamic State (ISIS), the Region’s presidency said in a statement.
They also discussed coordination and cooperation between the parties to preserve security and stability in the region, the statement read.
Both sides agreed on the “need and importance for joint and national works between all authorities, parties and components of the country so as to face challenges and overcome problems and crises,” the Kurdistan Region presidency stated.
They also hoped the parliamentary elections would meet the “aspirations of citizens for stability, services and a better life and future”.
Separately, Halbousi met with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prime minister in Erbil.
Besides elections talks, the two officials stressed the need to resolve outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad on the basis of Iraqi constitution, a KRG statement read.
They also stressed the importance for coordination between Iraqi and Kurdish forces to prevent ISIS and terror threats, according to the statement.
