Senior Kurdish officials meet Iraqi President Barham Salih in Erbil, October 12, 2020.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Senior Kurdish met with Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday to discuss latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Vice President Mustafa Said Qadir, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayaq discussed with Salih security, financial and health situation as well as early parliamentary elections in Iraq.

The officials reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s support for efforts of the federal government to preserve security and stability of Iraq, a joint statement by the senior officials.

They also stressed the provision of a stable environment for diplomatic missions and representatives in Iraq.

The Iraqi and Kurdish officials agreed that talks between Erbil and Baghdad should continue to resolve issues in the disputed areas, claimed by both the federal government and the regional government.

They also reiterated their support for an agreement between Erbil and Baghdad to normalize the situation in Sinjar and to allow the return of the displaced people to the district.

They “rejected attempts to change demography of the disputed areas,” the statement read, calling on the federal government to use the security and stability mechanism for the disputed areas.

Talks between Baghdad and Erbil were also discussed during the meeting. They also expressed their support for efforts and steps by both sides to resolve their issues in which the constitutional rights entitlements of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq are secured.
