SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Monday a surge in coronavirus cases in the Kurdistan Region is concerning, calling on people to follow health guidelines.

The Kurdistan Region recorded 926 coronavirus cases on Sunday, the highest daily rise this year.

“I’m deeply concerned by the surge in covid cases across the Kurdistan Region,” Barzani said in a tweet. “In this critical moment, I urge all four governors to recognize their solemn responsibility to the public and the nation. That begins by fully adopting the latest public measures.”

“This is not the time for complacency or politics. Our health sector is being tested again, our citizens’ lives put at higher risk of death, and our recent progress in containing the virus is now in peril,” he added.

The KRG premier also called on people to wear masks in public places, avoid gatherings and wash hands regularly.

As of Sunday, the Kurdistan Region had recorded a total of 119,480 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the health ministry. Deaths have reached 3,643.
