SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces detained an Islamic State (ISIS) suspect in Sulaimani last month, the directorate of Asayish said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the directorate of Asayish-West said its units detained a person who pledged allegiance to Islamic State and joined the militant group in Saladin province in 2014.

The suspect was arrested on February 27 in Sulaimani province, the statement read.

“After allegiance to ISIS, he went to Syria to continue with the group in 2015,” the security service said. “He returned to Iraq in 2021 and resided in Erbil province.”

“He then came to Sulaimani on February 27 and was arrested by the Asayish forces,” it added.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
