SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A fire broke out in a displacement camp for Yazidis in the Kurdistan Region’s district of Zakho early on Wednesday, killing three people.

Spokesman of Civil Defense Directorate in Duhok Bewar Abdulaziz said the fire broke out in Bersive 2 Camp in Zakho at 03:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Three people, including a father and his two children, died in the fire and three others were wounded, Abdulaziz told Esta Media Network.

“An electricity fault caused the fire and investigations into the incident has been launched,” he said.

More than 7,000 people are sheltered in the camp, mostly Yazidis.

In January, a fire burnt down four tents and damaged seven others at Bajd Kandal camp for internally displaced persons in Duhok province, without no casualties.

Four fires have broken out in the IDP camps in the province since January 1, according to authorities.

Several fires erupted at Chamshko and Kabartu 2 displacement camps in Duhok in 2020. The Chamshko camp hosts about 5,000 displaced Ezidi families, while Kabartu 2 shelters approximately 3,000 Ezidi IDP families.
