SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Education Alan Hama Saeed said on Thursday that a few cases of COVID-19 had been recorded among students in schools, but it is not scary.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) minister hoped the decision to reopen schools in the Region would last longer and that the coronavirus cases would not force officials to make other decisions.

“A number of cases in the schools have been recorded, but they are not many,” Hama Saeed told reporters, calling on media outlets to avoid playing a “negative role” in publishing news about it.

There are 1,710,000 students in the public schools and more than 1,000 students in the private schools in the Kurdistan Region, the minister added.

Schools were reopened on February 7 after the KRG’s supreme committee for coronavirus response decided to resume in-person education for all students.

The KRG delayed resumption of in-person classes for most students in autumn when the academic year began in the Region. It cited the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic at the time.

The Kurdistan Region has recorded 106,719 cases of the novel coronavirus, with 3,492 deaths and 102,041 recoveries, the KRG health ministry said on Thursday.
