SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Erbil Provincial Council will hold a session on Monday to elect a new governor, as three candidates are competing to win the position.

Head of Erbil Provincial Council Ali Rashid told Esta Media Network that three candidates had been nominated for the position.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has nominated Omed Khoshnaw, who is head of the party’s bloc in the Kurdistan parliament, as its candidate for the post.

“The KDP is supporting Omed Khoshnaw who is a member of the Kurdistan parliament, and the bloc is expected to vote for him,” Rashid said.

“The other candidates are independent and are not affiliated to any other factions,” he added.

Erbil governor Firsat Sofi died from coronavirus at a hospital in Turkey in November. He assumed the post in September 2019.
