SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.S.-led Coalition forces killed seven members of Islamic State (ISIS) in Qarachogh mountain southwest of Erbil and near Kirkuk on Saturday, the Iraqi military said.
Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a tweet that the Coalition forces carried out two airstrikes against ISIS militants in Qarachogh mountain range in Makhmur district and Kirkuk province according to “accurate intelligence and under the order of Joint Operations Command”.
The airstrikes killed seven ISIS militants and destroyed four tunnels used by the group’s fighters, the Iraqi military tweeted.
Earlier on Saturday, a Peshmerga commander said a Coalition strike killed an ISIS emir during an operation launched by the Kurdish forces in Garmian.
The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
