KRG allocates 1.6 billion dinars to cancer hospitals that enable them to buy medicine and medical equipment

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Sunday allocated 2.627 billion Iraqi dinars ($1.8 million) per month to hospitals where cancer patients are treated.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has ordered to allocate 1.6 billion dinars ($1.1 million) monthly to purchase medicine and medical equipment for cancer hospitals in the Region, according to a communique signed by Omed Sabah, head of Diwan at the Council of Ministers.

The KRG will pay 600 million Iraqi dinars to Nanakali and Rizgari hospitals in Erbil, 700 million IQD to Hiwa hospital in Sulaimani and 300,000 million dinars to Duhok’s Azadi hospital.

In a separate communique, the KRG premier instructed the finance and economy ministry to allocate more than 1.027 billion dinars ($704,000) per month as medical allowance for healthcare workers employed at the hospitals.

The funding came after local health officials in Sulaimani said the KRG had not provided funds for Hiwa hospital in the past six months, causing shortages of medicine at the hospital.

Hospital’s healthcare workers went on a strike last week in protest of not being paid for over six months, and patients also staged a protest outside the hospital against the shortage of medicine.
