SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked a unit of the Iraqi military on Tuesday, killing two soldiers, according to Iraqi media.
Shafaaq News cited a security source as saying that ISIS militants had attacked a military point near the Jalawla city on Tuesday evening.
Two soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in the attack, according to the source.
Jalawla, or Gulala in Kurdish language, is a disputed area claimed by both the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
