SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An Iraqi soldier was killed and six others were wounded in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in Diyala province, an Iraqi police officer said on Sunday.

First lieutenant Shaalan Kamil told Anadolu Agency that a number of ISIS militants had attacked an Iraqi military point in Khanaqin district in northern Diyala.

“Despite the continuity of military operations, ISIS terrorists intermittently carry out attacks against Iraqi forces,” the officer said.

The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
