SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Senior Iraqi and Kurdish officials on Sunday congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his re-election as the president of France.

Macron defeated his far-right rival Marine Le Pen on Sunday by a comfortable margin, securing a second term and heading off what would have been a political earthquake.

Iraqi and Kurdish officials took to Twitter late on Sunday to congratulate Macron on his re-election.

Iraqi President Barham Salih described France as an “important partner of Iraq”, saying he looks forward to strengthening ties between the two countries to serve common interests and establish security and stability in the region.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi expressed “wishes to promote joint action for the benefit of the friendly Iraqi and French peoples”.

“I congratulate my friend @EmmanuelMacron on his re-election as the President of France,” Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani tweeted.

“I look forward to continue working closely with him to further develop our ties and solidify our efforts to promote regional peace and stability.”

Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also sent “warmest congratulations” to Macron, saying that he looks forward to working with him to continue to strengthen the friendship between the Kurdistan Region and France.
