Kurdistan’s PUK and Islamic Republic of Iran stress strengthening bilateral ties – statement

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kurdistan Region’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Sunday stressed strengthening bilateral ties to cooperate in certain aspects.

Leading a top-ranking delegation of his party, Bafel Talabani, the President of the PUK arrived in the Iranian capital, Teheran yesterday to meet with the Iranian officials regarding Kurdistan-Iran pressing issues.

During his visit, Talabani met with the speaker of the Iranian parliament which is also known as the Iranian Majlis, Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, his office said in a statement.

In the meeting, “Strengthening PUK-Iran and -Kurdistan-Iran historic ties were stressed in the aspect of expanding trading exchanges, maintaining security, and cultural coordination,” the statement said.

Regarding the security situation of the area and maintaining stability, Talabani reiterated efforts to overcome the obstacles, according to the statement.

“I hope everyone makes steps for the sake of preserving the high interest, and our priority would be to maintain the security of the area,” he said.

“Our relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and Shiites are the result of our beliefs in cooperation with our friends for the sake of the high interests,” he added.
