SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Today marks the 18th anniversary of opening the milestone project of Sulaimani International Airport, a turning point for the Kurdistan Region following the fall of Saddam Hussien’s regime.

July 20, 2005, marked a landmark day for the Kurdistan Region, during which the first-ever plane landed at Sulaimani Airport following its grand opening.

The airport was opened by the late Mam Jalal Talabani who served as Iraq’s former President after the fall of the Baath regime in 2003.

Since then, the landlocked Kurdistan Region was opened to the globe, as well as international businesses and markets which contributed to the thriving Region.

In the meantime, Kurdistan’s economic, political, and diplomatic relationships were seriously developed as a result, leading to changes in social and cultural dynamics.

Today, the airport has flights to a dozen international spots and neighboring states, including local provinces.
