New border crossing between Kurdistan Region, Iran to open

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A new border crossing between the Kurdistan Region and Iran will be officially opened in the nearby future, according to the government on Sunday.

Located in the Tawela sub-district in northeastern Halabaja province, the Shwshme International Border Crossing initially serves as a tourist route, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said afte he made a visit to the area.

“The border crossing will be officially inaugurated in the nearby future, and it will have impacts on the economic revival of Halabja and Hawraman,” Talabani said in a post to his Facebook page.

He also revealed that he had met with the Iraqi Interior Ministry a week earlier. KRG and Baghdad will collaborate to upgrade and expand the border crossing, according to the post.
