SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The campaign which has been initiated by Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani to plant one million trees has been concluded and begun a new stage.
In December last year, Talabani launched an initiative to combat the climate change effects and the threats of desertification in the Kurdistan Region.
The initiative consisted of several phases during which one million trees were planted across the Region, including the cities and remotes, to add further green space.
“The planting process has been concluded, the initiative has reached a new stage which is about caring for trees, making sure that they would flourish and grow in a safe environment,” according to a statement released by Talabani’s office.
Talabani has ordered to provide the trees caring services. Irrigation systems, as well as fire lines, and fences to protect the newly planted trees, have been installed by the supervisors of the campaign.
“We noticed that the trees have grown very well and the campaign has been successful, considering the variety of the trees planted and the different nature and climate of the areas,” said Hawkar Jalal, the Director of Sulaimani Forest.
In the meantime, Talabani’s office further stated that “The success of the national campaign of greening Kurdistan by planting one million trees is a positive step in the direction of protecting the environment and green spaces.”
“Talabani has launched this initiative from his own vision of keenness for the good health of the citizens of the Kurdistan Region,” it added.
