SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish and Iraqi forces conducted a large-scale joint operation in areas stretching from Garmain to the oil-rich province of Kirkuk on Saturday.
The operation was aimed to eliminate the remnants of terrorists of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), which waged insurgent-style attacks after its defeat in 2017.
“The operation is a result of recent meetings that we had with officials in the Iraqi Ministry of Defense,” Mahmoud Sangawi, head of the Garmaser frontline of the Peshmerga forces told Esta.
He indicated that the Kurdish and Iraqi forces have signed an agreement to frequently launch joint anti-terrorism operations in the areas that are suspected of possing terrorism threats.
“Today’s operation was concluded and no clash or fire exchanges occurred,” He added.
Dozens of Iraqi Army brigades along with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces’ brigade participated in the operation which lasted at least five hours since early morning.
