SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Public outrage sparked among the Kurdish people on Sunday after cellphone footage went viral via social media in which guards forcibly remove the Kurdistan flag in an Iraqi football stadium.

Cell phone footage has shown that some security guards take Kurdistan flag from a young man by force in Basra’s stadium during Gulf Cup 25 which had recently taken place.

The young man attempted to wave the Kurdistan Flag during the final match of the Gulf Cup 25 tournament inside the stadium, however, some guards have forcibly taken the flag away from the young man.

The guards appeared in formal uniforms, according to the footage. Their reaction against the Kurdish flag remained unclear whether it was politically motivated or not.

Iraqi officials have yet to comment on the footage.

It is clearly stated in the Iraqi constitution that Kurdistan Flag is recognized across Iraq.

The spokesperson of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Sozan Mansour, said that they contacted Iraq’s Minister of the interior after the footage went viral.

“We asked for investigations,” Mansour told the minister, she said.

She also stated, “We asked them to prosecute the person who appeared in formal uniforms as the stadium security guard [The flag taker].”

Meanwhile, the minister has promised investigations, informing Mansour regarding the result, according to her words.
