SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region Security Service (Asayish) on Wednesday released a statement regarding the detention of journalists Aram Hassan and Sharmin Ali.
“Hassan and Ali’s dossier has no connection to journalism-related works or the freedom of expression,” the statement said.
It added that both detainees are allegedly charged per Article 341 of the Iraqi penal code which is related to the abuse of power, adding, “They are civil servants and the purpose to detain them is clear.”
Esta Media Network has learned that the detainees are civil servants and worked at the Parvez Khan Iran-Iraq Border Crossing in Sulaimani province.
There are allegations that the detainees are involved in certain corruption cases at the Border Crossing.
In the meantime, some claim Asayish has arrested Hassan and Ali over journalism-related works, a claim subsequently declined by the Asayish.
“All legal procedures have taken and the detainees have pleaded in the court to the determined judge.” “Asayish is only a law enforcement party,” according to the statement.
Asayish further stated that last Tuesday the International Committee of Red Cross made a visit to Asayish custody to learn about the detainees’ conditions. “The detainees’ families have also paid a visit to the detainees during the past few days.”
“Asayish’s door is always open for any legal party, individual, human rights organizations, and journalists who desire to investigate the case and make sure about the detainees’ situation,” the statement continued.
