PUK President congratulates Yezidi community on occasion of their new year

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani on Wednesday congratulated Yezidis on the occasion of their New Year.

Talabani expressed his hope that the Yezidis would mark their new year in joy and prosperity, according to a statement released by his press office.

Talabani also expressed his concerns over the authorities’ failure to fulfill the promises regarding Sinjar reconstruction which is the homeland of the Yezidis.

“The Yezidis in the past have witnessed countless violence and misery, they have made many sacrifices,” He said. “However, up to this point, the efforts to compensate and reconstruct their indigenous land have remained within the context of slogans and no serious steps have been made,” He added.

Further, Talabani stressed that the PUK has continuously supported the Yezidi community, and noted that it will back every single steps to build a brighter future and protect the lives of Yezidis.

In his concluding remarks, Talabani urged all sides to act responsibly toward the Yezidi people who are an indigenous community of Kurdistan, saying “Their fate and lives must not be played for the sake of political and party interests.”

The Yezidi community every year in April celebrates their new year which is also known as Red Wednesday or Charshmba Sor by visiting their holy site in Sinjar, the Lalish temple.
