SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Head of Sulaimani local government Haval Abubakir on Sunday stated villages in Penjwen were subjected to airstrikes last night and caused casualties.

The official in a post to his Facebook account stated that an airstrike hit three villages in Penjwen region east of Sulaimani province on Saturday night.

The villages that were subjected to the air attack were Kani Miran, Saliawh, and Wriawah, where four casualties were reported as a result, according to the official.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that two people were martyred and two others were injured due to the airstrike,” He said.

There were speculations that a vehicle allegedly carrying the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) militants had been targeted amid last night’s airstrike.

There have been no claims for the airstrike so far.

Turkey has regularly carried out similar attacks in the area, where it targeted suspected positions of the PKK which is an opposition to Ankara, leading an insurgency since 1984.

The PKK is recognized as a “terrorist” organization by Turkey, the US, and the European Union.
