Deputy Prime Minister says they diplomatically attempt to resolve Turkey-Sulaimani flight ban

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani discussed with the British Consul General in Erbil, Rosy Cave, the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s press office in a statement on Wednesday revealed that discussions also covered the Turkish airspace ban on Sulaimani. The Kurdish official addressed the British diplomat on Turkey’s ban on Sulaimani International Airport, according to the statement.

He stated that “The diplomatic efforts to resolve Sulaimani airport’s issue are continuing,” the statement said.

Further, The Deputy Prime Minister also voiced optimism that efforts will have satisfying results to address the airport’s issue.

Last week, Turkey announced that it has imposed a flight ban on flights from and to Sulaimani International Airport over the alleged intensification of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) activities in Sulaimani City.

The PKK, which has led an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is considered a “terrorist” organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.

The statement further added that the two sides touched upon the Kurdistan-Baghdad agreement, where the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that both sides should have a full commitment to the content of the agreement.

The agreement is impossible to be implemented if one party’s commitment fails, the Kurdish official told the British diplomat, according to the statement.

“The main party who will suffer distress is the Kurdistan people if the agreement fails,” he added.
