SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Thursday that the Kurdistan flag is a symbol of coexistence and freedom, as the Region celebrates flag day.
The Kurdistan Region celebrates Kurdistan Flag Day on Thursday with ceremonies and events to celebrate Kurdish culture and sacrifices made by Kurds throughout history.
The KRG premier said during a ceremony in Erbil that all the parties should work together to defend Kurds’ achievements and to struggle to improve people’s livings.
He also called on the future generations to be aware of victims made for the sake of the flag and a nation’s prestige.
“Kurdistan Flag is a symbol of sacrifice, nationality, patriotism and religion,” Barzani said. “Kurdistan Flag is a symbol of coexistence of nations in Kurdistan and those liberals who came to Kurdistan for sheltering.”
The Kurdistan Flag Day was designated by the Kurdistan Parliament in 2009. It chose December 17 because of its association with the Mahabad Republic, a self-governing Kurdish state that existed in the 1940s.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said in a tweet that he commemorates the Kurdistan Flag Day with “respect and prestige”.
“In this difficult situation, we stress on cooperation, tolerance and coexistence between the components of Kurdistan,” Barzani tweeted.
