SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A unit of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) attacked Peshmerga forces at a point on the border between the Kurdistan Region and Syria, said a senior Kurdish official on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of Peshmerga Sarbast Lazgin said in a press conference that around eight PKK fighters had tried to infiltrate into the Kurdistan Region from Syria early on Wednesday.

“A convoy of the armed PKK militants tried to enter the Kurdistan Region” from Syria at 1 a.m.,” the Peshmerga official said, referring to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

The Peshmerga forces stopped them from entering the Region, he added.

A YPG unit including 50-60 fighters attacked a Peshmerga point near Sihela on the border between the Kurdistan Region and Syria at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Lazgin added.

Clashes between Peshmerga forces and the YPG unit lasted for an hour and a half, he said, noting that the YPG fighters used heavy weapons including machine guns and RPG.

“The Ministry of Peshmerga condemns the attack,” he continued.

He called on the U.S.-led Coalition forces, backing the Kurdish forces in Syria, to have a stance and condemn the attack.

“it is unacceptable for the YPG in Syria to attack the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces inside the Kurdistan Region,” he noted.
