SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Health Ministry on Wednesday sent 50 tons of medicine to Turkey to aid the victims of the recent devastating earthquakes that rocked the country last February.

“Under the direction of KRG’s Masrour Barzani and Turkey’s request via the Turkish Consulate General who had asked for humanitarian aid, we sent 50 tons of medicine,” said Health Minister Saman Barzanji in a press conference.

Within the aid, 254 kinds of high-quality medicine are included, the Minister added.

Early February this year, two massive earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 rocked areas in southeast Turkey and northern Syria.

The quakes killed at least 50,000 people in Turkey, with at least 345,000 buildings destroyed in Turkey and over 100,000 people injured, according to the latest reports.

The KRG’s decision to send such a large amount of medicine to Turkey comes as the Sulaimani province suffers from the lack of medicine in public hospitals, according to a press conference of Sulaimani Health General Director Sabah Hawrami on Tuesday.
