Protest broke out in Smaquli over bad road conditions: reporter

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sulaimani-Erbil road was blocked on Wednesday after a protest broke out over bad road conditions.

Esta Media Network reporter on the ground said that residents of Smaquli villages, 80 kilometers east of Erbil province, have launched a protest against bad road conditions and the lack of services.

The protesters have blocked the Sulaimani-Erbil road by staging stones on the inter-province way, according to the reporter.

Most of the Kurdistan Region’s motorways suffer from a lack of maintenance or are poorly maintained by the government.

Every year, many people lost their lives in traffic accidents that are prompted by poor road conditions in addition to other reasons.

Many of the inter-province or outskirts motorways are single-carriageways that are under heavy loads on a daily basis due to intense traffic.
