Sulaimani forum continues for second day

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sulaimani Forum 2023 held by the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS) continued for the second day in Sulaimani city on Thursday.

The forum in which tens of senior diplomats, leaders, and politicians have participated kicked off in Sulaimani on Wednesday and is scheduled to last two days.

Qubad Talabani, the Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister, on Thursday said at a panel during the forum that “If the budget law gets implemented in the spirit that it was written in, I think there is a lot of money in the country that could be shared equitably.

Talabani further said the Kurdistan Region must have a role in the national oil marketing organization of SOMO.

SOMO must be reorganized by establishing another institution for oil marketing with the participation of the Kurdistan Region, he added.

“We have to restructure this [SOMO] and establish a strong system and a new organization that can sell the oil, and we need a new institution to redistribute the revenues.”
