PUK President calls on intellectuals to be ‘fierce’ critics of status quo

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President, Bafel Talabani, on Tuesday, in Sulaimani, met with a number of Kurdish intellectuals, authors, and critics.

“In the meeting, the situation of culture, as well as authors and writers, were discussed,” read a statement from Talabani’s media office.

“They also discussed freedom of expression and expanding the scales of freedom,” it added.

Moreover, Talabani praised Kurdish intellectuals’ position and role in different stages of Kurdish history and for the efforts that they have made to advance and increase the awareness of society.

“The Kurdish people own a rich legacy of literature and culture and we have a bright history in that field,” Talabani said, according to the statement.

Talabani also stated that the PUK will “proudly” assist and support the authors, writers, and critics.

“We have always supported strengthening the pillars of democracy and free think,” Talabani added.

Moreover, Talabani called on the Kurdish intellectuals to serve the public concern and proceeding the Kurdish cultural fields.

He also told the intellectuals and critics, “Be a fierce critics of the status quo and start by criticizing Bafel Jalal Talabani first.”

Moreover, Talabani demanded the intellectuals coordinate and expand the relations with all like-minded people in all parts of the great Kurdistan to serve the sweet language of Kurdish.
