SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The United Nations said on Saturday that urgent climate actions are needed to safeguard environment for Iraq’s future generations.

UNAMI said in a joint statement that UK, U.N. and France would co-host the Climate Ambition Summit, in partnership with Italy and Chile, on the fifth anniversary of the Paris agreement.

It added that Iraqi President Barham Salih was also chosen to speak at the summit.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will also address the summit, according to UNAMI.

“We welcome the recent ratification by Iraq of the Paris Agreement and its commitment to bold new action to reduce emissions including through a transition to renewable energy, improving energy sufficiency and encouraging more sustainable forms of transport,” the joint statement by UNAMI, British Embassy to Iraq, French Embassy in Baghdad and Italian Embassy to Iraq.

The organization further said Iraq is also making progress towards strengthening its resilience and adaption to climate change.

“Iraq is one of the most climate vulnerable countries in the world,” UNAMI stated. “Urgent climate action is needed if we are to safeguard the environment for future generation.”
