SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region parliament will discuss a bill regarding general amnesty, said a Kurdish lawmaker on Sunday.
A general amnesty bill has been prepared by the presidency board of the committee of human rights in the chamber, lawmaker Zkri Ahmed told Esta Media Network in a statement.
The decision to prepare the bill came after the presidency of the legislative chamber made a recommendation to the committee of human rights, Ahmed added.
The chamber is set to discuss the bill with the attendance of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of labor and social affairs as well as the representatives of the judicial council, public prosecutor, and interior ministry.
“The officials in the dedicated session regarding the bill will introduce ideas about who should be eligible for the bill, and return to their families,” he said.
The lawmaker further said that there are 6000 prisoners in the Region’s prisons.
He also warned of the “large” number of prisoners, adding that “the numbers are large, therefore, the eligible prisoners must be released after special procedures,” Ahmed said.
