Police arrest 16 suspects for barbarically attacking young girl in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Police arrested 16 suspects for barbarically attacking a young girl in Sulaimani on Friday.

Cellphone footage went viral on social media in which a group of young men physically attack a young girl in a race show, brutally beating her where she was also surrounded by hundreds of males and sitting defenseless on the ground.

According to the footage, the males have also swore at the girl calling her a “whore” reportedly over “attending” the race show.

The incident caused social media outrage. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has separately in a statement denounced the incident and called it “unacceptable.”

The President of the Kurdistan Parliament has also spoken about the brutal treatment of the attackers with the young girl in a tweet.

“The senseless assault by these male predators on the girl who like any ordinary person merely wished to watch a race is the result of a barbaric narrative used systematically against our women,” said Rewaz Fayaq, the President of the Parliament.

“A society or authority not awakened by this barbarism should await a rapid death,” she added.

Spokesman of Sulaimani police Sarkawt Ahmed said they arrested 16 “main” suspects who were involved in the attack and further investigations have been initiated into the incident.

Hwana, the Sulaimani suburb where the attack on the girl has taken place is known for widespread use of drugs by young men there and is also known as one of the most problematic and unsafe areas in Sulaimani.

While the girl has managed to leave the area without any notable injuries, a guy who wanted to help her escape the area was stabbed and has reportedly got injured, according to Kurdistan Watch.
