SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President, Bafel Talabani, paid a visit to the tomb of the Commander of Kurdistan Commando Forces, Akam Omar, in Erbil on Thursday, laying a wreath, his office said.
“Kak Akam will always remain in my heart as a brother,” and “We will remember his heroism and struggle with pride,” said Talabani, according to his office.
Commander Akam, the commander of the Kurdish elite forces of Commando died in Germany in mid-December from wounds sustained in an IED blast amid an anti-ISIS operation in late October in Garmian’s Zenana area.
Erbil-Born Akam Omar was the commander of the forces since its early formation in coordination with the U.S.-led coalition forces in 2015 amid the ISIS war across Iraq.
Kurdistan Commando Forces is a special force affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). It played a significant role in the fight against ISIS while receiving training from the U.S.-led collation forces, particularly France and Germany.
They are well-equipped and trained forces, in comparison to other forces, they own advanced weapons and military armored vehicles including tanks as well as non-combat helicopters.
