KRG ‘strongly’ condemns attack on Kurdish community in Paris

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday “strongly” condemned the attack on a Kurdish community center in Paris in which several people were killed and wounded. 

A gunman opened fire on a Kurdish cultural center and a nearby Kurdish cafe in central Paris on Friday, killing three people and wounding three others.

“The attack on the Kurdish diaspora in Paris and extend our condolences to the families of the victims, also wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. We call on the Kurdish diaspora to keep their calm,” said the KRG in a statement.

“We have full confidence in the institutions of the French government and the country’s judicial system to take the necessary measures to protect Kurds living in France as well as hold the attacker and criminals accountable,” it added.

“Kurds, wherever they live, should be able to live in peace and security,” Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Twitter. “Now more than ever, Paris is by their side in these dark times.”

In the meantime, French President Emmanuel Macron said “The Kurds of France have been the target of a heinous attack in the heart of Paris,” according to a tweet.
