Foreign Missions mourn death of Kurdistan Commando Forces Commander

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Foreign missions in Iraq expressed their sadness over the passing of the Commander of Kurdistan Commando Forces, Akam Omar.  

The Kurdistan Commando Forces announced Commander Omar’s death late Monday after almost two months under medical care in a hospital in Germany.

Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has directed a letter of condolences to the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Talabani, over the Commander’s death as he used to be his “closest” fellow.

“It’s a big tragedy to learn about the death of your dear friend, and a Peshmerga Commander, Akam Omar,” Hennis-Plasschaert told Talabani in the letter.

“I want to convey our condolences to you and his family, and I also want to honor the efforts that he presented to his country to confront terrorists and establish security and peace,” the letter said.

“At this difficult time, there is little to say that can give you peace, but it is important to know that the United Nations is sympathetic with you [Talabani] and the commander’s family” the letter added.

German, Brtish, and French consults also mourned the passing of the Kurdish Commander.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Akam Omar who died in Germany where he was treated after being seriously injured during an anti-ISIS operation. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Remains committed to the fight against ISIS,” the German consulate tweeted.

In the meantime, French Consul General to Erbil Olivier Decottignies said, “The French consulate extends sincere condolences over the death of Commander Omar,” and “It honors the role of the commander in the fight against ISIS.”

“It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Akam Omer, the commander of the Commando Forces. We extend our condolences to his family, relatives, and friends,” read a statement from Brtish Consulate General in Erbil.

Apart from this, the Commander of the German military forces in Iraq has also extended the words condolences in a statement, saying “our prayers and thoughts are with you at this mournful moment,” expressing deepest condolences as well.

A while back, in October, 19, Commander Convoy of the Kurdistan Commando forces struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Sulaimani’s Garmian administration, in the midst of an anti-ISIS operation in the administration’s Zenan area.

The explosion resulted in martyring officer of the Commando Forces Zuher Mohammed immediately and Injured four others including the late Commander, Akam Omar, at the time.

Following the incident, Commander Omar was severely injured. He was immediately transferred via helicopter to a hospital in Sulaimani.

The late Commander spent ten days in a hospital in Sulaimani, however, he has been transferred to Germany to receive further treatment, but died on Monday after 54 days under medical care.
