Kurdistan Region Political Parties form ‘High Council’ to settle issues

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region political parties have decided to form a “High Council” to settle the issues that grasped the Region, said a party official on Thursday following a meeting on the top level.

The political parties carried out a meeting on the top level following an invitation made by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). It invited all political parties to meet.

All of the Kurdistan Region political parties on the top level accepted the invitation and partook in the meeting except for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Esta has learned.

The meeting was initiated by PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, said Salar Sarhad, the head of PUK’s Kurdistani Relations. It took place in Sulaimani’s Dukan resort and later Talabani’s office confirmed that the meeting concluded after 5 hours with the participation of 17 political parties.

“On the PUK President’s invitation, the summit meeting of the Kurdistan Region political parties took place in the frame of national dialogue,” the office in a statement said.

“The meeting aimed at unity and resolve the outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad,” it added.

Regarding the decisions that were made within that frame, Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Socialist Party Mohammed Haji Mahmood following the meeting told Esta reporter that they decided to form a “High Council”.

The council aims to handle issues, particularly,  the rocky relations between PUK and KDP as well as Ebril and Baghdad’s outstanding issues, he said. “The participants’ parties all agreed on that decision,” Mahmood was quoted as saying.

Esta reporter said that the participant leaders voiced optimism as well about the meeting.

The meeting also highlighted the unity of the Kurdistan Political parties, according to his words.  And a joint statement is likely to be given in the coming hours regarding the meeting while no further information is available.
