SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Health workers who once used to volunteer themselves on the frontline of combating the Coronavirus have rallied Tuesday in Erbil, demanding risk allowances to be paid over partaking in that life-risking duty, Esta reporter said.

More than 500 health workers rallied before the Kurdistan Region Council of Minister’s palace in the Region’s capital. They were demanding the Kurdish authorities to secure their risk allowances and hazard pay, the reporter said.

“During the Coronavirus pandemic, we sacrificed our lives and our families, abided to go on duty,” a health worker who participated in the rally told Esta reporter.

Authorities have yet to comment on the rally.

According to the Region’s health officials at least 89 health workers died because of Coronavirus in the line of duty fighting the pandemic.

Back then, in September this year, The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said it will compensate the families of health workers who died amid combating the pandemic.

Each family supposedly receives a 5 million Iraqi dinners (3400$) allowance. But it’s not clear whether the KRG spend the fund or not since no families have revealed anything in this regard.

Like elsewhere in the world, Kurdistan Region has been battered by the Coronavirus, recording over 7000 deaths.
