Kurdish forces detain owner of Zerin City after flash flooding in Erbil

Heavy rain triggers flash floods in Erbil, October 30, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish forces detained the owner of a residential complex in Erbil on Sunday, after flash floods caused severe damages to the compound, a source said.

Heavy rain triggered floods and damaged hundreds of houses and cars in Erbil province on Saturday. Flash flooding also occurred in Sulaimani, with less damages.

A source in Erbil governorate told Esta Media Network that the owner of Zerin City was arrested over the project’s sewage failure.

“His detention was due to the project’s sewage, which caused a lot of water to accumulate and trigger floods,” the source said.

Erbil governor Omed Khoshnaw is expected to hold a press conference at noon to provide more details about damages caused by the floods.

Around 200 houses and a number of vehicles were damaged in Zerin City on Saturday.

Erbil police said in a separate statement that 25 people were rescued by the civil defense teams and aviation teams during the floods.
